Hello,
Does anyone know of an accessible registry cleaner/checker?

Post 2 by rat (star trek rules!) on Tuesday, 27-Feb-2007 11:26:15

reg scrub xp works ok for an xp machine not sure of other systems though

Post 3 by PorkInCider (Wind assisted.) on Tuesday, 27-Feb-2007 12:05:10

Bill, Reg scrub is quite ok, though if I were you, I'd try CCleaner from www.ccleaner.com as it has several tools, including a registry cleaner, and also a pretty good disk clean up tool. I actually use both, as often one tool finds stuff the other doesn't.

I like that advice blackbird. I used the disk cleaner portion of c-cleaner but I'll check for their registry cleaner.

Thanks.
Bob

bob, it's not obvious that it's the registry fix, it's called issues for some reason.

Post 6 by Farzana (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 27-Feb-2007 14:51:04

May i ask the function of registry cleaner? Which things it clean?

Post 7 by PorkInCider (Wind assisted.) on Tuesday, 27-Feb-2007 15:41:25

hmm, The registry. At least that would be my guess.

Post 8 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Tuesday, 27-Feb-2007 16:55:53

Okay jaws users (blackbird and all the other window-eyes users take a rest).
This portion of c-cleaner is not obvious with jaws.
At the top you have two pages I think it's windows and applications that you can manipulate with ctrl+tab. I thought that was all there was.

However, just turn on your jaws cursor and start arrowing down until you hear "dialog issues" and do a left mouse click on that. Then your tab should take you into the parts of the registry you want to clean.

Good luck.

Bob, There is also an option there called tools, which takes you into a tab for a more advanced vertion of add remove. be careful though because it will let you simply delete the entry from the list, which isn't the same as removing the program, but I've had programs that windows didn't remove eficiently which CCleaner tidied up as well.

Post 10 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Wednesday, 28-Feb-2007 5:35:56

I saw the tools page and actually got into the list of programs, but decided that I really didn't want to be there at that time.

Though c-cleaner is awesome, fast and thorough, you have to be careful what you do, it's a very powerful tool. But, it's not for the faint of heart.

I've also used hijackthis to look at registry entries and clean them out. It's not near as thorough as c-cleaner, but does a good job of putting things in perspective. Again, not for the faint of heart.

I think the rule of thumb is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
True, a messy registry can slow down your system, especially at load time, if you "clean" out the wrong thing, it can bring your system to a halt. One thing I like about c-cleaner is that it allows you to make a backup of the things it cleans so you can undo your changes if you want. You'd probably have to do it with sighted help though.

I use EasyCleaner which is a wonderful software, free, and accessible with any screenreader.
Yeah! go now and get it!!

I do use regscrub, and a product which i've heard advertisements for is registry mechanic from pctools.com, and they say that it is excellent at cleaning the registry, however, at least with JAWS, I found it to be somewhat accessible with use of the JAWS curser, because luckily, it selects everything that it finds after a scan is complete, so all you have to do is click repair with the JAWS curser, and it will fix things. As far as selecting and unselecting items, haven't had much luck. I ran regscrub this morning, and it found 6 items, and then I ran registry mechanic, and it found 112, and repaired them all. For those who are so inclined and know how to do it, I bet this application could be scripted, not sure though. I'd like to see it more accessible, as it is quite the registry cleaner.

Yeah, registry mechanic sucks with jaws so i use EasyCleaner.

I lived a bit dangerously and using CCleaner checked everythinkg and let it do it's job. Amazingly nothinkg bad happened. Would the disclaimer, "don't try this at home" mean anything?

Post 16 by Farzana (Veteran Zoner) on Wednesday, 07-Mar-2007 18:44:47

Thanks to buk buk buk. I downloaded easy cleaner, and will try. Thanks again.

Ok. I just downloaded easy cleaner and I have about 2000 pluss duplicate files. Should I just delete all of them? lol I've never done this before so I hope I don't screw up my computer. hehe
Also, I tried to read the help files but I didn't think they were very helpful. Any suggestions?

Hi Michelle.
Be careful not to deal with add/remove, duplicates and startup.

Post 19 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Friday, 09-Mar-2007 0:24:46

I downloaded EasyCleaner and it looks too powerful.

I think some of the things in here could get you in trouble. For example, you can mess with the services that startup and things like that.

I think I'll use it for looking at what it thinks should be deleted and unless I'm really sure, I won't do it. Good but scary program.

Oh! My! God! I'm never touching easy cleaner ever again!!! You know how I said I had 2000 pluss duplicate files? Well I deleted a few of them before waiting for a response to this topic and I really screwed up my computer! lol I shut off the computer and tried to turn it on the next day and it wouldn't talk at all. I typed in my password for my computer and it loaded but I didn't get any sound. There were some sound files I was currently editing on my desktop and they wouldn't play either. lol It just gave me this sort of beep within the P.C. and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I concluded that everything but the sound was working. I even tried to mute/unmute the thing and nothing happened. So I paid for my brother's cab fare and he came and took a look at it for me. lol Apparently, I deleted some of the drivers needed for my sound card. I asked my brother to do an undo in easy cleaner but it didn't work. Luckily, my computer creates restore points and I was able to do a system restore and everything works fine now.
So Buck Buck Buck. Thanks but no thanks!!! *shutters* If the system restore hadn't worked, I would have had to bring my computer to a friend's house who lives a few towns over and it would have been a pain. lol As you can tell, I don't know anything about computers. hehe Serves me right for wanting to try something new!
Quick question though. Does anyone know how to do a system restore without the use of jaws to help them?
lol I believe it was Bob who said "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I should have listened! hehe

Post 22 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Sunday, 11-Mar-2007 1:07:28

Michelle, shudder indeed, you poor thing.

Thanks for posting your bad experiences here--and I came oh so close to doing a complete clean. Shudder!

No, I don't know anyway to do a system restore without Jaws. Sorry.

Hey michelle. This software for professionals, especially add/remove, duplicates and startup.
Use Caution when using EasyCleaner, I'm not telling you to do this, I'm telling you what I did to my own computer to control it & help it run smoother & faster. Use this software at your own Risk, if you don't know what you're doing, don't ! Please read about it first, these are to be done as Administrator, not just User.
Ah, i forgot send my greetings to your brother, God bless him! God bless him!

Post 24 by WillieTheWoof (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Tuesday, 13-Mar-2007 20:55:59

Hmmm, and to think I was going to turn this software loose on a client's machine... Wait! what a great idea!

I know of one more registry cleaner yoou could try, although a friend of mine who uses Jaws can't find the update button to update the database of possible registry problems it can detect. It's called Advanced Windows Care V2 personal. Not only does it check the registry in a full system scan, but also looks for spyware, performs a check of your security defences, a privacy sweep, looks at your start-up programs, analyses system performance and a couple of other things. Really comprehensive and free too, would be great if Jaws users could find how to update it!

i use registery michanic, it's very good. I have no problems with using it with jaws seven point one zerio five double zero. it's necessary to use the jaws curser a fare bit though.

Great. thanks. I'll have to check it out.

Post 28 by The Lil Dark Piggy (This site is so "educational") on Tuesday, 20-Mar-2007 6:25:08

Yeah, I know that is there a command prompt to launch the system restore command, but I don't know what it is, its faster then having to goto all programs, accessories, then system, then system restore. When you want to restore your computer to a previous month or date, the less button means back, like a date, and the grater things mean forward. But I will look up the command prompt if oyu want.
And I heard that Registry Macanic isn't that grate.

Interesting. I love stumbling across topics like this one. If you also wanted something "too powerful" and easy (not quite like regedit) but a bit more far babysitting, x setup pro can do a lot for you (and i reall mean a lot) of things that would get you into trouble if you play with fire, obviously. Just check it out... it has some cool settings thoughb. Mindful of what you're doing is the better idea.
